The Outstanding Volunteer Award, sponsored this year by The Washington Trust Company, is presented annually during National Volunteer Week, held this year from April 27 thru May 3. This week is about engaging individuals in service, inspiring a nation to join a movement for change, and recognizing deserving volunteers. These awards serve to emphasize the important role volunteers play in Rhode Island and to recognize the time and talent invested by volunteers in nonprofit organizations throughout the state.
The Volunteer Center of Rhode Island is proud to announce the recipients for 2008 include:
- Sandy Antoni of Rockville, for her work with Turning Pointe Therapeutic Riding, Inc., located in Ashaway, RI.
- Dave Barsamian of Cranston, for his work with the Rhode Island Family Literacy Initiative, located at the Cranston & Providence Public Libraries, RI
- Roger Davis of North Kingston, for his work with Seeds of Hope, in North Kingston, RI.
- Gil Fletcher of North Kingston, for his work with PawsWatch Cat Rescue, in Newport and Plan USA, in Warwick, RI.
- Angela Frankudakis of Attleboro, for her work with Angelcat Haven Feline Rescue, in Plainville, MA
- Joyce Gilkenson of Providence, for her work with The Blessing Way, also located in Providence, RI.
- Wayne Hawkins of Coventry, for his work with AIDS Care Ocean State, located in Providence, RI.
- Claire Healy of Warwick, for her work with the Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital, located in Providence, RI.
- Arthur Plitt of Pawtucket, for his work with the Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island, also located in Pawtucket, RI.
- Ray Richard of Tiverton, for his work with the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology, located in Bristol, RI.
- RI Disaster Action Team Members, for their work with the American Red Cross Rhode Island Chapter, also located in Providence, RI.
- Teen Jonnycake of Peace Dale, for their work with the Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale in South Kingstown, RI.

VCRI is honored to acknowledge these individuals and groups as Outstanding Volunteers during "VolunCheers 2008!" . The ceremony, which coincides with National Volunteer Week, will take place on Tuesday, April 29th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Warwick, R.I. Reservations are $25 in advance. The event will include the presentation of twelve Outstanding Volunteer Awards, hundreds of Presidential Service Awards, complimentary appetizers, a cash bar, and entertainment from the band “Live Coverage”.
