Roger Davis of North Kingstown Honored
as a 2008 Outstanding Volunteer

The Volunteer Center of Rhode Island (VCRI) is pleased to announce that Roger Davis of North Kingstown will be honored for commendable service in her community through his work with Seeds of Hope and other RI nonprofits.

The Outstanding Volunteer Award, sponsored this year by The Washington Trust Company, is presented annually to several individuals and groups who have made a visible impact in their communities through focused and selfless volunteer work. These awards serve to emphasize the important role volunteers play in Rhode Island and to recognize the time and talent invested by the honorees, such as Roger Davis, in nonprofit organizations throughout the state.

Roger Davis is a volunteer for and the founder of Seeds of Hope, located in North Kingstown, R.I. His goal for the organization is to eliminate hunger in Rhode Island by utilizing volunteers to grow fresh fruit and produce for the hungry. In the past three years, Davis and his organization have produced over 16,000 lbs. of food. The food is distributed to twelve social service agencies throughout the state in addition to twenty families in need.

Davis also focuses his organization on education. He teaches communities how to grow their own food, while reaching out to people of all ages, including youth centers and seniors. Davis also provides demonstrations on organic gardening, water conservation and environmentally safe practices.

In addition to his work with Seeds of Hope, Davis volunteers at the Providence Ronald McDonald House and with the Future Farmers of America. He has also created a network to distribute clothing, furniture, toys and household items to people in need.

“Roger invests all of his heart and soul into whatever cause he dedicates himself to,” Donna Davis of Seeds of Hope praises, “He has an unbridled passion for helping those in need. He plans to encourage people to grown their own ‘victory gardens’, victory over hunger as he calls it.”

Davis will be honored for all of his achievements as an Outstanding Volunteer during "VolunCheers 2008!" on Tuesday, April 29th at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Warwick, RI.
