August News:
National Report on Volunteering in America Released
In its recently released “Volunteering in America 2008” report, the Corporation for National and Community Service ranks Rhode Island 41st in the nation for its overall volunteer rate and 46th in the nation for overall volunteer hours.

Volunteer Hour is Worth A Lot, According to Independent Sector
Volunteers may lend their time for free, but the service they provide to their communities doesn't come cheap. That's because according to the latest calculation by the Independent Sector, the estimated value of a volunteer volunteer time is $19.51 per hour for 2007, up from $18.77 per hour in 2006. Koch Eye Associates Employees Come Together to Care for Community
Koch Eye Associates’ employees don’t typically spend their work days painting or picking up trash, but July 29 was no ordinary day at the office. That’s because July 29 marked the company’s 6th annual Koch Eye Cares Day, a community celebration that matched 126 Koch employees with non-profit organizations across the state for a day of volunteer service. Disaster Manager Returns After Assisting with Flood Relief in Indiana
As the Volunteer Center of Rhode Island's Program Manager for Disaster Services, Don Corbishley is often responsible for training volunteers how to respond to a disaster. The Outstanding Volunteer Award, sponsored this year by The Washington Trust Company, is presented annually during National Volunteer Week, held this year from April 27 thru May 3. This week is about engaging individuals in service, inspiring a nation to join a movement for change, and recognizing deserving volunteers. These awards serve to emphasize the important role volunteers play in Rhode Island and to recognize the time and talent invested by volunteers in nonprofit organizations throughout the state.
